The DJ Melee, from Hip Hop Congress:

“DJ Melee /dee jay maylay/ n. 1. A touring DJ competition showcasing the vinyl scene and urban nightlife in major U.S. cities. 2. A gritty, documentary style reality show. 3. One hell of a party.

Each DJ will have only five minutes to pick up 30 pieces of vinyl to use in a thirty minute set at a series of DJ Melee parties thrown at Austin’s best clubs. All vinyl goes straight into a locked box until show time. Local industry judges will have the final vote on the DJ’s mixing skills and music knowledge. With reputations on the line, who will be crowned the best DJ of Austin and move on to go head to head with the best Los Angeles and Brooklyn has to offer? Records will be broken!”

Above, local favorite and Yo Majesty tour DJ, DJ Orion, was a competitor in the third round of the Melee with DJ Bigface and Coolhands. The final round is this Friday at the Mohawk with DJ Starsign, DJ Bigface, and the Giant Hornets from Japan. The next round of DJ Melees will be this fall in Brooklyn, where the winner of the final round there will compete with the winner in Austin. Go DJ:
