Black Spade will be at Whisky Bar tonight, which is the perfect place a artist with a flow this smooth and tonic. With all the sounds on his album To Serve With Love, you can tell Spade is well versed in many types of music- and is talented at bringing them together. He ranges from rapping over thick R&B and soul, to funk, to some hand clapping electro beats on his tracks. “As We” uses Marvin Gaye’s sample “Distant Lover” perfectly, while the “Genius in You” whole heartily pays homage to some of Spade’s worn-on-his-shoulder influences like Q-Tip and Common. Spade is the rapper and producer on the album, using mostly looped vocals and vocalist John Coultrain for some tracks. From St. Louis, Spade sounds bigger than he is, or is yet to be.
