Having seen the Black Angels and Viet Minh, Alex Maas’ side project, a solo set by Christian Bland piqued my interest. On January 20, Christian Bland will play a set along with Georgia’s Dead Confederates and Austin’s The Tunnels. The drone machine/organ operator of the Black Angels has put together some impressive demos that can be heard at his MySpace profile (see below).
Christian Bland’s sound is similar to that of the Black Angels, which is not a bad thing. In “Black Crayon” his voice floats over the guitar strumming and tambourines like wind over a landscape, echoed and hollow. Christian Bland has created a sound that is slow and moving, with the constant shake of the tambourine like a ghost keeping time. The aching harmonica lightens up the lyrical content in “Shadow Child”, and makes me feel as if the song could have been recorded on the front porch of any East Austin farmhouse. Bland’s infusion of psychedelic rock and folk is dark and mellow, his voice creeps over the chords and is the perfect excuse to ignore any sunny day.
