What is a low line caller anyway? Two parts synth melodies, one part reverb, one part hey man, let’s go sit on a beach somewhere, topped off with some Brandon Flowers-esque vox. I’m usually not the type that enjoys those 15 minute song kind of bands, but these guys are different.

Once an instrumental six piece sporting two drummers, LLC is a quintet now and has added singer Marc Ferrino, giving the sound an emotional pull it lacked before. Caller’s ability to build their sound, measure on measure, is what keeps the listener interested. Each song is a little trip to space and back, and the view is nice.

The set started with “It’s like I think”, an instrumental gem which has an addicting guitar riff reminiscent of “Tonight Tonight” (throwback!) paired with spacey synths. The teenage lyrics found in “Over the Counter Kids” always triggers some warm youth nostalgia for me, but maybe that was just the Lonestar. But happy hour prices aside, this band does it right. There was word of an album release after the new year and if that happens, it is sure to be on many year end lists for 2008. Until then, next time you are myspacing at work go check out their page and have a listen, it will take the edge off and make you rethink the cube-icide you’ve been planning.
